The lymphatic system is part of your immune and fluid-balance system. It is a network of vessels, lymph nodes, and organs that helps move fluid through the body, remove waste, and support immune health.
Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to your cells, and fluid naturally leaks into the spaces around those cells. Most of that fluid returns to the bloodstream, but a small portion becomes lymph fluid. This lymph fluid travels through lymphatic vessels and passes through lymph nodes, where excess fluid, waste, and unwanted particles are filtered out.
Lymph fluid moves in one direction—upward toward the neck—where it eventually returns to the bloodstream. Unlike blood, which is pumped by the heart, lymph moves with the help of muscle movement, breathing, and gentle stimulation.
The body contains hundreds of lymph nodes, which act as checkpoints to support immune function and keep fluid moving efficiently.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, hands-on technique that works just beneath the skin to support the body’s lymphatic system. Using light, rhythmic movements, MLD encourages natural lymph flow, helping the body move excess fluid and waste away from the tissues and back toward circulation.
MLD is especially helpful for individuals experiencing swelling, fluid retention, inflammation, or recovery after surgery. Many clients find it supports comfort, relaxation, and overall balance, while gently assisting the body’s natural healing processes.
MLD may help to:
MLD is often used as a supportive therapy for conditions involving swelling, inflammation, immune stress, or recovery, including:
MLD may be helpful if your body is having trouble moving fluid efficiently. Some common signs of lymphatic congestion can include:
If these symptoms sound familiar, lymphatic drainage may help support your body’s natural flow and overall balance.
Possible Side Effects
MLD is generally very gentle and well-tolerated. Some clients may experience mild, temporary effects such as a light headache, fatigue, or feeling slightly “off” as the body adjusts. These sensations usually pass within 24-48 hours.
When MLD May Not Be Appropriate
MLD is not recommended for individuals with active infections, blood clots, kidney failure, or unmanaged heart conditions such as congestive heart failure. A comprehensive assessment will include a review of your health history to ensure MLD is safe and appropriate for you.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a non-invasive, complementary therapy intended to support wellness and recovery. It is not a substitute for medical care and may be used alongside medical treatment when appropriate. Please feel free to call our therapist directly with any questions: Nurse Lisa @ 313-318-3141
